Confused on the Terminology - Don't be...

1080i / 1080p

1080i / 1080p means 1080 lines are used to create your TV picture. Half of these lines are scanned and displayed in a first pass and the other half in a second pass. This is called 'interlaced scanning'. With progressive scan a complete image transmitted in each frame. What this means in practice is that progressive gives a smoother picture, especially where there is motion

720p

720p means 720 lines are used to create your TV picture. With 720p, all of the lines are scanned and displayed in one pass, in a technique called 'progressive scanning'.

Bit rate

Bit rate is measured as 'bits per second' (bps) and refers to the rate at which data is transmitted.

DLP

A DLP (digital light processor) is a display device that reflects light on a pixel-by-pixel basis to create a projected image.

DVI

Some HD TVs have a DVI (Digital Video Interface) connector instead of an HDMI connector. An adapter is needed to connect this to the HDMI connector on a Digital box. A DVI connection carries only picture information and not sound, and therefore a separate audio connection is also needed when connecting to say a Sky HD.

HD Ready

HD Ready is a European standard for HD TVs agreed by the TV industry. In order to use the HD Ready label, manufacturers must ensure that their TVs comply with a set of technical criteria.

HDCP

HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a copyright protection system that is incorporated into HD TVs and HD boxes. It prevents unauthorised duplication and distribution of copyrighted content. TVs that are HD Ready incorporate HDCP.

HDMI

Many HD TVs have an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connector, which can be used to connect to your Sky HD box. Think of it as the HD equivalent of a SCART connector. It's the simplest and best way to connect to a digibox, as it carries both the picture and sound digitally - giving you the best possible quality.

Interlaced scanning

Interlaced scanning is a way of reassembling a TV picture from a series of electrical (video) signals. With this technique, a display shows all the odd lines on one scan of the screen and then all the even lines in a second scan of the screen.

LCD TV

LCD TVs are one of the two main types of flat TV (the other is plasma TV).

MPEG4

MPEG4 is an efficient means of compressing the data that is sent to a TV, allowing more information to be delivered than in MPEG2.

PAL

The UK broadcasting format for standard definition TV. We've been using PAL since TV was first introduced.

Pixel

'Pixel' is the abbreviation for 'picture element'. Pixels are the smallest bits of data in a video image. The more pixels there are in an image, the greater the resolution.

Plasma TV

Plasma TVs are one of the two main types of flat TV (the other is LCD TV)..

Progressive scanning

Progressive scanning is a method of displaying a TV picture. Under this technique, all the horizontal scan lines that make up the picture are 'painted' on the screen in one pass. That means 720 or 1080 horizontal lines are scanned one after the other in a vertical frame. This is repeated 50 times a second. Some displays, for example LCD and plasma, scan progressively, while traditional TV sets usually scan using interlaced lines.
